Kelly Slater’s at it again. In the last few years, he’s stuck his fingers in just about every kind of business pie. Since he parted ways with Quik, Slater has developed a taste for business opportunities. His newest venture? Furniture. Weird, right? But not that weird, considering it’s a line of furniture that’s made from recycled and sustainable materials.
The champ paired up with PBteen, a division of Pottery Barn that focusses on (surprise!) teens. Kelly’s designing 40 pieces for them, including furniture, bedding, wall art, lights, and accessories. The furniture will be built from wood the Forest Stewardship Council approves, the bedding made from organic cotton, and rugs from recycled fabric.
In the last few years, Slater’s been gathering up chunks of businesses. He started Outerknown, a clothing company that’s not really for surfers (but kind of is), kicked off an energy drink that won’t kill you called Purps (it’s purple!), and, if the rumors are correct, bought a majority share of Firewire Surfboards. A driving theme behind all of his ventures is an environmental slant.
“While collaborating with Kelly, he challenged our team to bring sustainability to every part of the Kelly Slater for PBteen collection,” said president of Pottery Barn Brands, Sandra Stangl. “We are proud to say this is the most environmentally responsible collection we have brought to market to date. We believe it’s very empowering to show tweens and teens, regardless if they surf or not, that they can make a difference for the world’s resources by being mindful of their personal choices.”
