The Inertia

Kelly Slater is not a young man anymore. It doesn’t seem to matter to him, though, because he is still surfing like one. Time waits for no man, as they say, and it’s not waiting for Kelly either. But Kelly’s not paying attention to the time. Over the course of his long and storied career, he’s made himself at home at some of the world’s best waves, and some of the world’s best waves are in Bali.

The video you see here is from Surfers of Bali, a group that’s been pointing cameras at Balinese waves for a long time now. Since they’re generally at the right place at the right time when a good swell rolls through, they’ve got a ton of footage just sitting around that includes some of the world’s best surfers. Surfers like Kelly Slater.

“Kelly Slater has spent a bit of time in Bali over the years, scoring some great waves at Uluwatu, Padang Padang, and Keramas,” reads the caption on the YouTube page. “Here’s a 20-minute edit of some of those sessions dating as far back as 2020.”

You may remember that Slater showed up in Bali in the midst of the pandemic. While it may not have been the smartest idea to be traveling at that particular time, if you’re interested in scoring empty waves… well, nothing like a global pandemic to serve them up. His arrival just so happened to coincide with an absolutely incredible run of swell, so I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Kelly doesn’t regret a thing.
