If you happened to be one of the lucky and select few who grew up on Oahu’s North Shore, there’s a good chance that you surfed every single little lump of water that made its way to that slice of paradise. But not every wave on the Seven Mile Miracle is picture perfect. The one Koa Rothman, Eli Olson, John John Florence, Ivan Florence, Nate Florence, and Kiron Jabour surfed in the video above is one of the not-so picture perfect ones. In fact, it’s almost un-surfable.
“Me and the squad headed out to a scary but fun secret wave we all grew up surfing,” he wrote on YouTube. “…The current is crazy and the wave itself is trying to eat itself.”
While most surfers would likely look at this wave and come to the conclusion that paddling out would be an exercise in futility, this crew didn’t. And that’s a good thing. “This wave almost doesn’t seem like a surfable wave,” Koa concluded, “but we try anyway!”
