Surfing Malibu is hilarious. All the rules go out the window. Surf etiquette does not exist in that particular lineup. Even on small days, it’s packed and drop-ins are the norm. But when the waves are perfect, the water is warm, and it’s a holiday? Look out.
That was what Brad Jacobson captured on Labor Day. Everyone was off work. The water was unseasonably warm. And, of course, a large south swell was lighting the place up. The chaos at Malibu is pretty well-known, but it’s on a whole different level when those particular stars line up… and Jacobson got what he expected to get.
“Malibu is usually more crowded than most spots but when you go on a holiday with a good swell in the water…” he wrote, “expect things to get hectic.”
