Mark Mathews is a boss. Whenever you see those scary dark blobs pop up on your surf forecasting models, chances are that Mark is already on a plane and en route to tackle it head-on. But in charging mutant death-slabs all around the globe, there is bound to be several moments of carnage. Take last year for example. Mark busted an eardrum last August while trailing behind Taj Burrow in one of the freakiest looking tubes ever surfed. There wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that he was going to make it, but he did it for the shot. And it was magical.
Seeing how much brutality this guy is capable of enduring makes us think that getting washed over the rocks at Ours last week ain’t so bad for him. But for the rest of us, getting rocked by a set and washed over some rocks totally sucks. Just ask Tyler Wright.
