The Inertia

Matt Bromley has been in the barrel far more than the vast majority of surfers out there. The barrel, as you know in your years of chasing it, is the end-all-be-all of surfing. Not airs, not turns — the barrel. Sure, those other things are great, but any surfer will tell you that the barrel is the ideal.

Getting thoroughly barreled, however, is not easy. Most of us have had a head dip or two, maybe even a few tube visions. But a gaping, stand-up barrel? That’s rare for the average Joe, no matter how many pros you see surfing them on YouTube. Like anything worth doing, it takes skill, luck, and dedication. But a few tips from someone who knows how to ride the tube well can’t hurt, right?

This is part one of Bromley’s online tutorial, and part two is already out.

“For many people this is the dream, to get into the barrel,” Bromley says. “In the following episodes we are going to dive deep into barrel riding and everything from how to position oneself for the tube to riding it with confidence.”

Of course, nothing works like doing, so get out there, put yourself in uncomfortable positions, and paddle in. And whatever you do, don’t barrel dodge.
