Remember last year when Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark on live television? Of course you do. For a few short weeks, it was probably the one of the most talked about thing in the world of surf, and maybe the world in general. But Matt Wilkinson and Owen Wright weren’t watching.
Since they were both out of the J-Bay event and just so happened to be in Africa, they decided to go hunting for some not-so-crowded waves. And that’s exactly what they found. While all the other pros were grinding it out for points, Wilko and Wright were shark diving, barrel-hunting, and generally living the good life.
Now, of course, things have changed. Wilko is currently leading the tour ratings, and Owen is still recovering from his horrible head injury at Pipeline. Mick Fanning has become a household name. But some things will never change: that lust for empty waves, and the pleasure of not only surfing them, but looking for them.
