The Inertia

Do you like Mick Fanning? Do you like Australia? Do you like music? Do you like saving the planet and saving the animals? Yes? Oh, do we have something for you!

Mick Fanning is singing his swan song soon. After nearly two decades, three world titles, and a shark attack heard ’round the world, he’s hanging it up after the Bells Beach event.”I will be competing at the opening event at home on the Gold Coast and then wrapping things up at the Rip Curl Pro,” he wrote. “Bells Beach is where my Championship Tour career really kicked off, I’ve always loved the place and it seems a fitting stop to finish things up. It’s gonna be a big fun party and you’re all invited to come. Hope I see you there.”

Did you catch that last part? He hopes to see you there. No, he really does. Fanning, along with Omaze, has put together a campaign that’ll put you on the arm of White Lightning himself. Remember Omaze? Oh, it’s amazing. In short, they run campaigns where the average everyday Joe (or Jill) Plumber can throw a bit of coin in the pot for the chance to do something incredible with one of their favorite famous people. Kelly Slater and Shane Dorian took someone to Fiji to help More than Sport, an initiative that “supports the youth of Hawaii with education, opportunities and experiences to help their future flourish”, and Borneo Orangutan Survival Australia an initiative that helps (you guessed it) Orangutans.

So what do you get with Fanning’s campaign? A lot. The winner gets flown to Australia and put up in a 4-star hotel. They get tickets to a music festival called The Drop, a shopping spree at the Torquay Rip Curl store, VIP access at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, and even if you suck, you could spend a day surfing with Mick.

All you have to do is donate a measly $10 to Omaze. I mean, you should donate more, but $10 is the minimum, which ain’t bad for the chance to head to Australia. What’s that $10 going towards, you ask? A wonderful cause called WildArk, a “conservation organisation with a mission to protect as much of the world’s biodiversity as possible and to inspire people to reconnect with nature.”

This isn’t the first time Mick has stuck his neck out for WildArk. He did an Omaze campaign for them last year which raised a staggering $96,000.

So go on, click here. Donate a few clams for a good cause, feel good about yourself, and then, if you’re lucky, go to Australia and be Mick’s best friend for a day.
