Pedro Calado is no stranger to taking heavy waves on the head, but sometimes, the waves are heavier than anyone expects. That’s when a good rescue team becomes an absolute necessity.
The footage you see here is not new. The wipeout happened a few years ago, but it has recently been reshared on Barena Film & Sports. In it, Calado falls on a big one, then waits helplessly as Nazaré unloads on him a few more times. The surfers at Nazaré often get the glory, but they wouldn’t be able to do what they do without the help of some of the most talented Jet Ski pilots on the planet.
“The most compelling part of this footage isn’t just the fall — it’s the rescue operation,” Barena wrote. “This video offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at what happens during the most critical moments in Nazaré: how the Jet Ski pilots spring into action and how the safety protocols are executed under extreme pressure.”
After Calado vanishes from sight for a few terrifying seconds, he pops up amid a maelstrom of whitewater. Were there no safety teams in place, it’s not likely that Calado would have survived. It’s a sobering thought, but that fact proves how dedicated everyone who surfs Nazaré is, from the surfers to the rescue teams. Next time you’re watching big wave surfers do their thing, watch the rescue teams, too — because they’re just as responsible for the feat as the surfers themselves.
