The Inertia

Australia has no shortage of mutant slabs. There’s Tasmania’s Shipstern Bluff, Sydney’s Cape Solander and Perth’s Cyclops, to name a few. One slab in particular, though, has earned its place in the annals of surfing history for its heavy, shallow and unpredictable wave: The Right.

Videographer Tim Bonython is no stranger to any of those waves, having hade it his business to explore all the world’s most jaw-dropping breaks. However, even seasoned veterans can get surprised every once in a while. While Bonython’s most recent video started off with yet another mission to The Right, it ended up an unexpected detour to a nearby, lesser-known peak.

“A small piece of reef poking out where deep water swells hit hard that create a serious tubing barrel,” described Bonython in the caption. “We call this spot the LEFT as it’s on the other side of a large Western Australian bay from the RIGHT. These two waves are in my favourite top Aussie 3 waves that I love to film.”

As Bonython goes on to explain, the trip started off as a pilgrimage to the right with big wave charger and Nazaré regular Toby Cunningham. However, when things didn’t pan out there, they decided to go off-script, with spectacular results. Once across the bay, they were joined by Ned Hart, Zac Haynes and Matt Dunsmore, who snagged some epic waves, including one ride that Bonython claims is a contender for wipeout of the year.
