The Inertia

Newport Beach, California has many different faces when it comes to surfing. Of course it’s famous for the Dirty ‘Ol Wedge, a mutant slab that can be one of California’s most dangerous barrels. That particular wave is well known in the surfing world and beyond. And it’s a summer thing as Southern Hemisphere swells light up that section of beach.

South swells, especially big hurricane swells, can make Newport look like the North Shore on occasion. It doesn’t happen all that often, but when it does, it’s a sight to behold. There are so many different waves in this little region.

I happened to catch Newport Beach going off a couple of years ago on one of my Southern California filming missions. What you see above is raw surfing clips from a magical morning in Newport on July 15, 2022. As you can see, the waves can get pretty fun. Or terrifying, depending on your perspective. Enjoy this little recap.
