There are a lot of amazing things about Portugal. The beaches are stunning. The food is amazing. The people are friendly, the weather is great, and it’s steeped in culture. For surfers, however, the waves are one of the biggest attractions in a place full of attractions. Nic von Rupp explores his home country more than pretty much anyone else for his YouTube series, Portugal Back-to-Back. In his most recent vlog, he gets off the beaten track a bit and heads to Aveiro.
It’s not the first place you think of when you think of surfing in Portugal, but with its clean swell and relatively empty lineups, that’s a bit surprising. Back-to-Back isn’t solely about Portugal’s waves. It’s more of a surf-focused travel show.
“This new Portugal Back-to-Back ride takes Nic along the region’s beautiful estuary — a national nature reserve called Ria de Aveiro — and through the gorgeous architecture of the town and quaint canals that have earned its ‘Portuguese Venice’ moniker,” von Rupp’s team wrote. “On top of it all, Mr. von Froth investigates one of Portugal’s last great surfing secrets, finding perfect beachbreak peaks with no one around.”
Nic is joined in the episode by Joaquim Chaves, a local charger of some acclaim. “I feel like Aveiro is not known for surfing, but it’s not for lack of waves,” Nic says. There are great waves here on its day when it’s offshore. There are plenty of beachbreaks on offer, equivalent to some of the best beachbreaks in Portugal.”
