Good weather, good waves, good food, good people. You can score good surf in Portugal in the summer if you know where to look. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

Portugal, for my money, is one of the best places on planet Earth. The waves are fantastic. The food is incredible. The people are as warm as the weather, and it’s steeped in fascinating culture. I’ve been lucky enough to go there a handful of times, mostly work-related, and I would move there in a heartbeat should the opportunity arise.

Most times I’ve been there, I’ve linked up with Nic von Rupp. Nic, of course, lives in Portugal, and he spends much of his time either surfing Nazaré or riding as many of the other amazing waves the beautiful little country has to offer. Like most places, though, it has its doldrums, wave-wise.

“Summer in Portugal gets tricky — but the south still holds if you know where to look,” he wrote. “In this video, I’m breaking down my favorite surf zones from Lisbon to the Algarve. Different swells, different setups — but still plenty of reasons to chase waves down south.”

Like most places, you need a few things to score when you’re on an off-season surf trip. “Smart timing, local knowledge, and a bit of luck,” said Nic. “That’s how you score this time of year.”
