Laird Hamilton made 28th of October a sad day for female (and male) surfers. After what I can only imagine being the most exhilarating and at the same time terrifying decision in Maya Gabeira’s life, she ventured out in treacherous conditions off the coast of Portugal and she surfed the biggest wave of her life–a wave that she almost gave her life for. There is no other response to that display of courage, of unwavering commitment to push your limits in the name of passion than “bravo.” Who cares if she wasn’t prepared enough – who could ever be prepared enough for such a task?
The 28th of October should have been a glorious day for the surfing community. One of our most fearless female water warriors attempted the impossible and survived. Bravo.
