The Inertia

The southern coast of Australia’s New South Wales is a wild place. Dylan Longbottom knows that, because it’s where he cut his teeth. He grew up chasing slabs there, and it dictated how he surfs and the kinds of waves he prefers. Recently, he headed to Cape Solander to take a big swing at a few big waves, and now his slab tour is rolling on.

“After an unforgettable start at Cape Solander, Dylan Longbottom, Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, and Lucas Fink continue their journey along the South Coast of NSW — the proving ground where Dylan grew up chasing slabs,” wrote Tim Bonython, the man who put this film together. “For Chumbo — Red Bull athlete and widely regarded as the most respected surfer at Nazaré and others — this is all part of an incredible dream run… trading giant Atlantic walls for some of Australia’s heaviest and most unpredictable waves.”

In this installment, a trio of totally different waves all lit up in a single run of sessions. “First, a point break that on this day resembled Cloudbreak — a long, powerful 8–12-foot left-hand barrel stretching down the line,” Bonython continued. “Then, a shift in direction to a slabbing right-hand barrel, with Lucas Fink taking things to another level, threading tight, technical pits with precision. And to finish, a crazy right-hand slab breaking way out to sea — raw, isolated, and as heavy as it gets. Three waves. Three different challenges. One relentless run. This is what happens when world-class surfers and locals stay on a roll through Australia’s best slabs — pushing deeper, going harder, and chasing something special.”
