Ocean Beach waves breaking on January 24, 2024

The Inertia

Ocean Beach is a notoriously hard place to surf. The waves get big. The current rips. The paddle out is shoulder-breaking, and that paddling never really stops until you’re done surfing and back on the beach. But for Ocean Beach surfers, there’s nothing they like better.

It’s a bit of a fickle place — depending on the kind of surf you’re hoping for, I suppose — but on January 24, 2024, everything aligned.

“Experience one of those rare inner sandbar days at Ocean Beach, San Francisco,” wrote DG Films on YouTube. “The kind surfers dream about but almost never score. Perfectly lined-up peaks, groomed offshore winds, and heavy, hollow bowls breaking right on the inside made this session absolutely epic.”

Hanging around near the inner sandbars at Ocean Beach, however, is a blessing and a curse on a day like the one you see here. Sure, those inside sets are good, but surfers waiting on the inside sets are bound to get hammered by the outside sets. And at OB, the outside sets are not to be trifled with. Still, though, I’ll bet you’d be hard pressed to find a surfer in the water that day who didn’t think it was worth it.
