Orlando Bloom and Great white shark

The Inertia

Stand-up paddlers are in a unique position to see what’s lurking beneath the surface. Due to the fact that they’re a little higher up than a surfer who’s lying down — and due to the fact that they often just cruise around for the sake of cruising around, the ocean’s creatures are seen more often by paddleboarders. Orlando Bloom is one such paddleboarder, and in this video from Carlos Gauna, known as The Malibu Artist on YouTube, Bloom (and a bunch of others) ended up with a very close look at one of the ocean’s most feared (and most misunderstood) predators.

“Stand-up paddleboarders have some of the most incredible encounters with great white sharks—and they don’t even realize it,” Gauna wrote. “In this video, I break down why paddleboarders see more sharks than anyone else, how white sharks behave around them, and what these interactions reveal about these fascinating predators.”

As Gauna was flying his drone above the ocean in Southern California, Bloom was joined by an eight to nine-foot white.

“As he told me afterwards, the shark was nearly invisible until he was right next to it,” Gauna explained. “This demonstrates how effective the counter-shading on a white shark can be.”
