Pedro Boonman loves Desert Point. It’s hard not to if you’re a surfer who loves barrels, and Boonman is nothing if not that.
He recently made his way over to Lombok in hopes of scoring his favorite wave on the planet, and it’s safe to say he got what he came for. “For me, Desert Point is the best place in the world,” he told me via Instagram.
The wave you see in the clip here was Boonman’s first one of the day. He awoke early, as one does on a surf trip with a good forecast, and decided to take a look at the conditions.
“I woke up at six, in the the dark,” he said. “When I went to check the waves, it was like five-foot sets with a bit of morning sickness. I decided to wait a little to see if someone was paddling out so I could understand how it was working.”
As he watched, the morning sickness quickly started getting better, so Boonman decided he’d get out there. As soon as he was out in the lineup, it was clear he’d made a good decision.
“After watching for 45 minutes, I saw a good set coming in and I went to my room to get my board shorts and my GoPro,” he remembered. “When I got to the middle of the point, the set came in and I got this POV on my first wave.”
Desert Point, however, isn’t the easiest wave. It’s a quick drop with a racing tube, but Boonman has put in the work and knows how to handle it. Still, he almost didn’t make it.
“It wasn’t an easy one,” he said. “I was super deep and I almost fell on the first section, but I managed to get over the foam ball and I had two more sections in front of me. I actually don’t know how I came out of that barrel, as you see on the GoPro.”
He did come out, though, and the footage he got is about as good as you can get. And whether he filmed it or not, it’ll be seared in his memory banks for a lifetime.
