Prince Harry isn’t known for being a surfer. He’s known for being a prince and for marrying Meghan Markle and for not wanting to be a prince or something. Lots of drama for all involved. But although Prince Harry isn’t known for being a surfer, he has enough money to get barreled.
I’ve been surfing for a lot of years. I’ve been a bit barreled, but not very barreled. It’s a bit depressing, really, but I guess it’s nice to have a goal to chase. A big, stand-up tube is all I want. Is that so much to ask? The Surf Ranch doesn’t offer big, stand-up barrels, but it does offer barrels way longer than I’ve ever had the fortune of surfing. Years ago, I had an opportunity to go there, but I was in Mexico and decided to surf Mexican waves over man-made ones. That’s a decision I’ll regret forever, or at least until I get another opportunity to give it a go. I cannot afford it myself, though, but you know who can? Prince Harry.
I am not a great surfer. An average one, I’d say, but definitely a bit better than Prince Harry. And Prince Harry, with the help of the legendary Raimana, got way more barreled than I’ve ever been. I love to see it, but for some reason I also hate to see it.
Although I think everyone in the world should know the joy of a tube, I also think that the joy found inside a tube needs to be earned. It’s a conflicting feeling, because who am I to decide how much work someone needs to put in to feel joy? H.G. Wells said something that applies to me watching Prince Harry getting barreled at the Surf Ranch: “Moral indignation is jealousy with a halo.”
