What happens when you put six of the world’s best female surfers under 25 on a Mentawai island and film it all? According to the surfers themselves, the outcome was “crazy airs,” “powerful waves,” and “better than anything (we) could have ever dreamed of.”
To see for yourself, you’ll have to watch Red Bull’s new film Now Days, which had its premiere in Hollywood last week. Produced by ex pro surfer and director Jodie Nelsen, the film will be available to watch May 1 on RedBull TV.
The new guard of women’s surfing — Caroline Marks, Caity Simmers, Molly Picklum, Sierra Kerr, Erin Brooks, and Sky Brown — have done much more than prove that they are the future of surfing. They’re the now, too.
That group has accounted for the last three world titles and four have already been Olympians (albeit Brown’s medals are in skateboarding). In particular, Kerr, Brown, and Brooks continue pushing the limit of what’s possible in the air. It’s a contrast to the men’s Championship Tour, where the tour veterans are holding onto power. The next generation of women’s surfing has taken the reins and run with it.
Each surfer gets their own part in the film, which takes them to idyllic spots like Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, and South Africa.
“I’m especially proud to be part of this generation of women in sports,” Marks said of the film. “I believe it’s our job to make the future even brighter for the next generation. If you put your mind to something, you can accomplish things beyond what you ever believed possible.
Kerr, who called Brooks’ section her favorite in the film, highlighted how, despite often competing against each other in the water, they genuinely push one another to improve and move the sport forward.
“These girls are my friends first and inspirations always,” said Kerr. “Grateful to be part of this new generation of surfing. Inspired by the legends before us and the girls pushing the level today. Hoping we can inspire the next generation the same way. Honored to be part of the Now Days with these girls and the amazing team that made this possible.”
Now Days should be an indicator of what we can expect when the LA 2028 Olympics roll around. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that all six of these surfers will be competing.
