The Inertia

Rob Machado and Jackson Dorian are two very different sides of the surfing coin. Machado, a living legend. A style icon. A guy who has shaped surfing into what we know it as today. Jackson Dorian, the son of another living legend, Godson to none other than Kelly Slater, and a surfer who, by all accounts absolutely rips. He, like nearly every surfer in the world, has been at least partially influenced by the likes of Rob Machado. As each year passes, Jackson gets better and better. Stronger and more confident. He truly is his father’s son, and his surfing shows it.

Recently, the duo paddled out on Rob’s newest creation, the difficult-to-pronounce-but-fun-to-surf Machadocado.

“Designed by Rob Machado, inspired by the outline of an avocado mixed with the DNA of a fish and the performance of a shortboard,” Firewire says of the surfboard. “Experience the joy of catching waves you’d previously not even consider trying to catch on the Machadocado with ease. This is Rob’s most versatile squash tail yet. Whether you’re an experienced surfer or just beginning, this shape will be your best friend on smaller days.”

Of course, Machado and Dorian can surf a little better on just about anything than the average surfer, but surfboards like the Machadocado are made with the average surfer who surfs average waves in mind. It’s a nice change from what the surfing masses gobbled up back in the day, when surfboards with the volume of a piece of paper and rockers like elf shoes were all the rage. What sucked, though, was that unless you were a high-level surfer, those boards were tough to ride.

Nowadays, however, surfboard manufacturers and surfers alike have moved into shapes that are a little more user friendly. But when surfers as talented as Rob Machado and Jackson Dorian are riding them, they shine just a little brighter.
