For quite some time we’ve been aware that Italy – specifically the Italian island of Sardinia – produces some fine surf. Albeit, not super often.
It’s one thing to understand that intellectually, though, and quite another to really get it. Yes, it’s possible to get tubed in Italy if you’ve got the patience and local knowledge to do so.
Recently, Aritz Aranburu, Marlon Lipke, Gony Zubizarreta, and Roberto D’Amico were all chasing swell in Portugal when a purple blob showed up on the Mediterranean swell charts. One night before the swell was set to light up Sardinia, the crew jetted over to Italy by way of Rome and strolled to the shoreline to find a few pretty solid corners. No doubt the boys enjoyed a nice Chianti and relived all the insane waves they got that night.
