The Inertia

Catching a great wave alone is fun. But most surfers would rather catch that wave in the company of good friends. Surfing, after all, if used wisely, is a vehicle that brings people together – a medium where bonds can grow stronger.

A newly released South African surf film taps directly into that ethos.

In Where the Air is Thick With Glory, brothers Dave and Murray Armstrong, along with close friends, set out to showcase the raw beauty of their country’s landscapes and waves. They surf their way down the African coast, from the tropical waters of Mozambique to the cold, windy waves of Cape Town.

Along the way, they toast to the friendships forged through a shared love of riding waves.

“Good waves with anyone is sick, but to do it with those closest to you is extremely special,” says Dave.

The film serves as a reminder that South Africa may be one of the world’s ultimate surf paradises. Its images reveal vast stretches of untouched coastline, empty lineups, windswept dunes, and rugged mountains. At its core, the film strips surfing back to its simplest form: having fun and sharing meaningful time with the people you care about.
