At least this guy realized his mistake and pulled out. Kudos, guy. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot
A very long time ago, I was complaining to a friend about the crowd at First Point, Malibu. Ironic, I know, because I, like the people I was complaining about, was just one of the crowd. My friend laughed. “If you’re not in front of someone here,” she said, “you’re behind them.” Unfortunately, that’s the case in a lot of places, and the Gold Coast’s Superbank is one of them.
In the video you see here from Surf Days, there are three-ish minutes of it pretty brutal burns. It’s one of the most crowded lineups on Earth (and the most crowded in Australia), full of talented surfers who know two things for sure. The first is that you shouldn’t drop in on someone. The second, unfortunately, is that if you want a wave, you might have to drop in on someone.
Oh sure, there are plenty of examples of “I thought you weren’t going to make the section” here, and even a few examples of people who were not, in fact, going to make the section. Also, thankfully, there are a few flat out mistakes that were rectified as soon as the burner was able to kick out. But still, pulling into a barrel and seeing someone else down the line doing the exact same thing ahead of you is… frustrating, to say the least.
