Lakey Peterson surf mobility warm up routine

The Inertia

Not too long ago, professional surfers who trained outside of actually surfing weren’t the norm. It wasn’t until people like Mick Fanning got the ball rolling that it became normal for those who make a living surfing to hit the gym. Now, of course, pro surfers train just like other professional athletes, as Ventura-based Championship Tour veteran Lakey Peterson showed in her latest video.

As you age, training becomes more and more important. Sure, it pays to be healthy, but another added benefit is that it will likely enable you to surf for longer – not just longer sessions, either. If you maintain your fitness and flexibility, you’ll be able to surf for more years than you would if you just surfed every now and then before sitting in a cubicle all day.

“I have had a lot of you requesting a pre-surf warmup video so here it is,” Peterson writes. “This is the mobility routine I complete before competing and also free surfing.”

Like many others who spend countless hours lying on a surfboard with their backs arched, Peterson has had her fair share of aches and pains.

“I’ve had numerous lower back injuries,” she explains, “so I cannot stress how crucial warmups can be for everyone.”

This video is a good one to follow along with for anyone looking to keep their body in decent shape, if only to have more fun for longer.
