The Inertia

Malibu is one of the most crowded surf zones on Earth. All the rules have gone out the window there. A friend of mine once had some advice for me about surfing First Point. “If you’re not in front of someone,” she told me, “you’re behind someone.” What she meant was that if you don’t paddle for a wave there, you’re not getting a wave alone. There are a few people who, if the other surfers are smart and somewhat in the know, don’t share waves there (looking at you, Sarlo!), but for the most part, you’re going to have to get used to it. The wave there is perfect, but sometimes it’s hard to justify rubbing shoulders with a million other people. Need proof? Check out the video above, courtesy of Brad Jacobson.
