If you were excited about the Teahupo’o trials, you were more than likely very happy with what occurred instead. All the best tube hounds converged at the End of the Road, hoping to earn a spot. Nathan Florence, Anthony Walsh, Jack Robinson, Koa Rothman, and all the locals — who stand out when things get really, really hairy — were there, jerseys in hand. When it became apparent just how big it really was, the event was called off. Twenty-foot bombs detonated on the reef, and the freesurf everyone hoped for came alive.
With one day in the rear view, the swell has dropped significantly and the trials are on — but you can bet that they won’t be as exciting as the day before.
