The Wedge with Koa Rothman

The Inertia

There are few places in surfing that are more entertaining to watch than the Wedge. It’s a wild wave that grows and growls and deals out the fiercest of poundings. The focus isn’t exactly on making the wave — although that certainly is a cherry on top — but simply dropping into it. And recently, the Wedge got big.

On April 23, Koa Rothman left Oahu to head to New York for an event and a photoshoot with his relatively new sponsor, Darc Sport. After that part was done, he had two options that depended on the forecast: South America or California. A few days later, he made the call, and it was California that was calling. On April 26th, he landed in California, made the obligatory stop at In-N-Out, shook off the jet lag for a day, then headed to Newport to surf the Wedge.

“The Wedge is kind of pumping,” he said. “It think it’s going to be a really good two days. Tomorrow is going to be way bigger, but today will be a nice little warm up day. It looks really fun. It’s like six-to eight feet and tomorrow is going to be bombing.” After meeting up with Jacob “Zeke” Szekely, he got down to business.

As it turned out, the next day was way bigger. If you’re only here for the big day, scroll ahead to the 9:15 mark in the video below.
