Father’s Day at the Wedge started off calm — scenic, peaceful, and quiet. Families strolled the beach, sailboats drifted in the distance, and the breeze felt like summer had officially begun. It’s the type of morning in Newport Beach, California that makes you forget how wild this place can be.
But down in the far corner, where the rocks meet the sand, the story was very different. The surf got heavy.
Yeah, that tiny wedge of water is anything but calm. It’s loud, violent, and merciless. Even Jamie O’Brien — one of the best big wave surfers in the world — got worked. His board didn’t survive.
