The Inertia

A few days ago, a man named Allen Engelman was bitten on the hand by a seven foot spinner shark. Afterwards, he went to the hospital, got a few stitches, then went fishing for the shark.

Engelman was surfing at Ocean Reef Park in Florida when he was bitten. “I could feel his teeth biting into me,” he said. “He was pulling on me with a lot of power. With my right hand I grabbed his pectoral fin. He was tugging on my hand, and I was tugging on him and he let go.”

After his trip to the hospital, the commercial fisherman ended up with 15 stitches and and a taste for revenge. A day later, he packed up his son and a fishing rod, then decided to try and catch the shark that bit him.

Keep in mind that Florida is jammed full of spinner sharks, so the chances of Engelman actually catching the one that bit him are pretty slim. He says he did though, judging from the markings on it. Either way, it seems a little like cruel and unusual punishment. But at least he’s not just going to mount it on his wall and make its death a complete waste.

So what’d he do with it? “Now that we got the shark that bit my hand,” he said, “we’re going to fillet it and we’re going to eat it.”
