The Inertia

Ari Browne is a fantastically good surfer. You might know him for his finless exploits (of which there are many), but it’s safe to assume that if someone is really good at riding finless, they’re really good at riding with fins. And in this edit from Mollusk Surf Shop, his talent is on full display.

Browne is riding an interesting little fish called the Lucid Fish. Made by Luke Daniels, an Australian shaper who knows what he’s doing, it’s a strange board. It’s stringerless, for starters, and it features a scooped-out deck that, apparently, creates “a parabolic flex pattern as it’s loaded up during turns.”

With a single to vee-double concave on the bottom, it’s something that was heavily influenced by Dick Van Straalen, another Australian shaper who is lauded as “one of the most innovative and creative shapers in Australia.”

The board you see here isn’t the first version of the Lucid Fish, and it’s been a relatively long road (but a fun one) to get to where it is now.

“It has slowly evolved over the past few years to what it is today,” Mollusk writes. “A versatile fish designed for various punchy waves.”

After watching Browne on it, it’s hard to deny that it does look incredibly fun. But hey, if you’re riding a wave on any kind of surfboard, you’re doing something right.
