The Inertia

You know what’s really, really fun? Riding weird surfboards. Surfboards that slide a little faster. Surfboards with a little less bite. Surfboards that take a bit of getting used to. Of course, it’s more fun when you’re someone like Torren Martyn, Laurie Towner, Hahnee Chelkowski, or the Surfrider Foundation’s Drew McPherson. More fun because the “getting used to” part is a little bit shorter than it might be for the average surfer.

In needessentials’ latest film, Unconventional Craft, Martyn, Towner, Chelkowski, and McPherson paddled out with a few Surf Coast locals to experiment with a few different shapes. The waves were pumping.

“Torren mixed things up, riding an experimental 4’6” Simon Jones-designed twin fin, while Laurie Towner focused on asymmetrical designs,” the needessentials team wrote. “Hahnee, a surfer from Tasmania who also features in needessentials’ latest film, The Spaces In Between, rode a self-shaped, longer-length board, while Drew enjoyed another unconventional craft: a Simon Jones-designed Remote Location twin fin. The crew took different approaches to some quality winter conditions, and these are some images from the swell.”
