Uluwatu surfing

Plenty of waves for plenty of surfers on a picture-perfect day at Uluwatu. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

When Uluwatu gets big, it’s a wave that might look tempting to an Average Joe. That’s because it is basically a perfect wave, but those waves can be deceiving. On April 27, though, an Average Joe would have had a blast there — and a lot of them did.

One not-so-average surfer who was there was William Aliotti. With a slight offshore wind and a 16-second period, Uluwatu was a wave out of a dream. Not so huge it could drill you incredibly hard and not so hollow you risk death, but just big and hollow enough to be manageable for a middling surfer with aspirations of being not-so-middling.
