The Inertia

Uriah McDonald is only seven years old, but already he’s exceptionally comfortable doing things that most seven-year-olds wouldn’t be comfortable doing. Like surfing Pipeline.

He’s a lot more than just a surfer, though. Last year, he learned to backflip on a snowboard. He can handle himself just fine on a skateboard, too. He’s not scared to surf hollow, shallow waves like Teahupoo, either.

In this video from Uriah’s YouTube channel , Uriah headed to the North Shore with his coach Vini and his travel buddy Giacomo Mesinas in tow. He spent some time at V-Land with Eala Stewart, a North Shore staple who showed him the ropes, before heading to Pipeline to try his hand at the world’s most famous wave.

It took a few days for Pipe to calm down enough for the grom — it’s been a wild run of swell in recent months — but on their last day, it decided to let him have a go. It wasn’t his first time, either. About a year ago, he paddled out to Backdoor and got his feet in the wax. Barton Lynch was watching from the beach this time, hiding from the sun under all that beard, and he had good things to say.
