The Inertia

I love raw surfing videos, but you know what else I like? Color correction, editing, music. Luckily Justin Spencer just dropped an edit with all of those, plus some pretty waves. In the video, released on Spencer’s YouTube channel, some Sydney surfers get cracking on what has been a run of good surf in the region.

Editors are often the unsung heroes of cinema. A good edit can shape the narrative of a story, land a joke, or completely transform a scene into something more meaningful than the sum of its parts. In a good surf edit, it can make the viewer feel less like a passive beach observer and more like an active participant. For a nice moment highlighting the art form, check out 2:05 in the video, where one rider gets slapped in the side of the head by a lip, right into a hard cut to the next scene. Rather than just being thrown from his board, the man gets erased from the earth. That’s how you make an edit.
