Remember last year when Bethany Hamilton, as a wildcard, scorched her way through the Fiji event? Well, it looks like she might be on track to do it again.
Last year, she beat Tyler Wright in the second round, she went on to beat Steph Gilmore. Then, she beat a very in-form Nikki Van Dijk in the quarters before her run was stopped by Joanne Defay in the semis. Incidentally, she’d already beaten Defay in the same heat she beat Gilmore in, but it was a non-elimination round. Suffice to say that Bethany can hang with the big dogs. But you knew that already.
While it’s still early, Hamilton is in fine form. In the first round, she beat Tyler Wright and Tatiana Weston-Webb, rated number one and number 12 in the world, respectively. “I’m so stoked to be the wildcard,” she said. “I watch all the events and all the girls are ripping so much!”
Then, she went on to beat Johanne Defay and Courtney Conlogue in Round Three, Heat 1 at the 2017 Outerknown Fiji Women’s Pro. It’s fair to say the Hamilton is looking primed to do some serious damage.
