The Inertia

Every year, Carlos Gauna spends untold hours flying his drone over the ocean in search of great white sharks. Other stuff, too, but great whites are his main focus. In the process of doing so, he sees a lot of amazing things, and Gauna recently decided it might be interesting to shark fans to drum up a Top 10 list.

“Every year, I film dozens of great white shark encounters along the Southern California coast, ” he wrote. “This video is a countdown of the Top 10 great white shark and human encounters I personally filmed in 2025.”

You might expect a Top 10 list involving great white sharks to be scary. If it bleeds it leads, as the old saying goes, but that’s not reality. Gauna knows that great white sharks get a bad rap, so in this video, he’s not including the clips that might grab the bloodthirstiest of viewers. Instead, he wanted to show them a little more honestly.

“These aren’t the scariest moments,” he continued. “They’re the most honest ones — encounters that show how great white sharks actually behave around people when nothing is influencing their behavior. From surfers and swimmers to kayaks and fishing boats, this video documents real moments of coexistence, awareness, and restraint — scenes I witnessed repeatedly throughout the year.”
