It should come as no surprise to anyone that there are sharks in the ocean. It’s not breaking news, especially if you’re lucky enough to call Southern California home. Most of the time, people like to stay away from sharks — especially great whites — but you’d be surprised at how many times we share a few square feet of ocean with a shark without knowing it. With the rise of the drone, however, things are changing a bit, and Carlos Gauna, a man who spends plenty of time filming great whites in Southern California via drone, has noticed a new-ish trend.
“People are now recognizing the drone signals a shark is nearby,” he wrote on his YouTube channel, The Malibu Artist. “Instead of avoiding the area, folks are now approaching the sharks by looking for the drone.”
Now, that’s probably not the best idea, but it’s understandable that people want to have a close encounter of their own. And after a long, rainy winter, the sharks are making their way back to the area. In the video above, Gauna’s drone alerts a group of paddlers to a great white shark right next to them. They react how many people would: with complete surprise.
