The Inertia

Weddings are beautiful, aren’t they? So much love in the air. Tears of joy, laughter, drunken dancing, everyone looking stunning, etcetera. A day to remember for all involved. Especially when that day involves a grizzly bear killing a moose a stone’s throw from the bride and groom.

It’s a heart-wrenchingly sad video, but it is Mother Nature in action. On August 18, the beautiful couple were tying the knot in front of friends and family, as beautiful couples do. They were doing so in Glacier National Park, and they hired wedding videographer Stanton Giles to capture the day. Giles, though, did not expect to capture what transpired.

A few minutes before the bride and groom said their vows on the shores of Two Medicine Lake, wedding guests noticed a baby moose with its mother on the slope across the lake. Soon, though, they noticed that the unfortunate young animal had been separated from its mother and had been chased down to the shoreline.

“The grizzly bear chased the moose off the mountain and down onto the shore of the lake while the groom was reading his vows,” Giles said. “Why didn’t I capture it on camera you ask? Because I’m a good wedding videographer, and I was filming the groom!”

Giles waited until the groom finished his vows, then alerted them to what was happening just across the lake. The wedding party turned and stared in awe at the grizzly killing its prey as Giles filmed. And while it might be hard to watch, again, it’s just nature doing its thing. The wedding wasn’t ruined, at least according to the groom.

“This was such a wild and incredible experience that even now we are in awe,” he said. “We chose to elope in the heart of nature at Glacier and knew what we were getting into. Always respect nature and wildlife. We’re thankful everyone is safe, and Stanton was able to capture this or no one would ever believe us!”
