The Inertia

A video circulating around social media shows a person on a personal watercraft (PWC) doing something super dangerous but kind of awesome in a dumb way: riding under the stern of a huge ferry.

If you live on Vancouver Island or in Vancouver, you likely use BC Ferries a lot. If you use BC Ferries a lot, you likely hate BC Ferries. Traveling surfers heading to somewhere like Tofino will probably be on one at some point, too. There are other options, like the new Hullo passenger ferry or a float plane, but if you want to bring a vehicle with you, you’ll need to pay an exorbitant amount of money and likely miss a ride or two.

The video shows the PWC pilot chasing after the ferry — the route isn’t clear, and there are many routes — before accelerating under the stern. After they were alerted to the clip, the RCMP decided they would begin investigating. Although the video just started making the rounds last week, it’s not clear exactly when it was shot. It’s likely that the vessel in the video is the Queen of Coquitlam or the Queen of Surrey during its run from Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay/Sunshine Coast route

“We’ve seen the video and are taking it seriously,” BC Ferries spokesperson Shiryn Sayani told CTV News in a statement. “This type of behavior is illegal under federal marine safety regulations.”
