The Inertia

Mullaghmore is not a place for the fair-weather surfer. Luckily, those interested in surfing Mullaghmore are not that. Surfers like Gearoid McDaid thrive when things get hairy, and there’s no place like Mully for that hair to be long and matted.

You’ve likely heard by now that Mullaghmore was recently the site of a swell for the history books. “This winter we witnessed something truly special at Mullaghmore,” McDaid wrote. “The biggest swell in five years lit up the reef with pristine, once-in-a-generation conditions, drawing the world’s best big-wave surfers to the west coast of Ireland.”

Surfers from around the world flew in when the swell showed its teeth in the forecast. The temptation to try their hands at maxed-out Mullaghmore was too much for McDaid, Nic von Rupp, Mason Barnes, Andrew Cotton, Ben Larg, Conor Maguire, Callum Curtain, Ollie O’Flaherty, Dylan Stott, Peter Conroy, and Bernard Cahill, and giving into that temptation paid out in spades.

“When Mullaghmore wakes up,” McDaid finished, “the world pays attention.”
