“If at first, you don’t succeed then try, try, try, try again.” Mastering anything in life takes a lot of effort, persistence, and sometimes a few good falls before we finally get the hang of things.
The girl shredders in this video take some gnarly falls, display some real grit, and most of all show how much fun sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing can be.
The fear of wiping out is what prevented me from surfing as a kid. At the time, just thinking about the fins was enough to make me shiver, let alone the idea of falling off the board and having the waves possibly throwing those fins at me. It took a solid 12 years of watching from the sidelines before I finally joined in on the fun.
Back then, you’d hardly ever see other girls in the lineup and they were almost never featured as athletes in action sports media. Today, it’s a different story. The media spotlight is slowly starting to shine on women athletes from around the globe. I hope that by creating and sharing something like this video or even stories about girls who shred, we can continue to add to this movement of normalizing women in action sports and encouraging more girls to give sports like skateboarding and surfing a try.
