Things really couldn’t be looking any better for the Billabong Pipeline Masters event. After a miserable Haliewa event and a weird (but pretty awesome) Sunset, the third – and biggest – jewel in the Triple Crown is shaping up to be a banger.  To add to the ASP’s inconsistencies, they’ve allowed a change in format, but it’s not necessarily a bad one. Heats will overlap until the three-man round four, then from round five on, it’s man-on-man. A solid northwest swell lit up Oahu’s north shore in the last few days, producing throaty barrels and clearing that pesky sand off Pipeline’s notorious reef. With the biggest swell of the season so far showing its face today, it looks like a sure thing that big, perfect waves will show up to surfing’s big show.
