The Inertia

Just about anything Kai Lenny does in the ocean is amazing. And he has a knack for making it all look easy, even while surfing one of the heaviest waves on the planet. Lenny’s worked his way up the pecking order at Pe’ahi, which is something he credits to having a special connection with the wave.

Considering he grew up on Maui it’s really no surprise he has an attachment to its most famous wave, but even familiarity doesn’t exactly breed comfort here for the 23-year old big wave surfer. We tend to think big wave surfers are without fear and that their superhuman abilities make it easy to tackle waves like Jaws. So it’s interesting to hear somebody like Kai Lenny, who has been on the big wave scene since he was a teenager, talk about having the same amazement with big surf as the rest of us.

“Just to survive out there is an achievement,” he says. We couldn’t agree more.
