Isn’t it grand when to mortal enemies squash their issues and join forces? For some dumb reason, asshole surfers and spongers have had a hate on for each other for a long time now. “Fuckin’ dick draggers!” the asshole surfers yell. “Stand up!” Generally, the bodyboarder just sighs, puts his head down, and continues doing what they were doing. The asshole surfer then feels vindicated and proceeds to tell his other asshole surfer friends how big his dick is. But if those asshole surfers (you’re not one of them, are you?) would look to the past, they’d see that more often than not, those “dick draggers” are some of the hardest charging surfers out there–in fact, many of the heaviest waves being surfed around the planet were pioneered by them. Almost inevitably, though, an asshole surfer shows up and claims it for themselves, like a chest-pounding gorilla staking his claim.
So when Daniel Fonseca (on the bodyboard) and Lourenço Katzstein joined forces to unite in their common interest for coming close to death at heavy, slabbing waves, it was a nice thing to see. Of course, if you’re going to go slabby, you might as well go cold, too. The pair watched as a very large swell headed towards Ireland, then decided to go and see how much they could scare themselves.
