Nathan Florence knows big waves. He knows big wipeouts and he knows big barrels. That’s because he’s surfed lots and lots of very big waves. For years, he went about the business of surfing waves most people would run screaming from quietly in the shadow of John John. Now, though, he’s burst onto the scene with his weird kind of mohawk and that goofy, ever-present grin.
Of course, living on the North Shore is a good way to get comfortable in waves that are way too big. Take, for example, Waimea. Back on March 19, Florence spun on a big one. The drop that followed should not have been possible, but thanks to Mike Latronic’s video footage, we have proof that it happened. Now, it’s an entry in the Ride of the Year Award category of the 2019 WSL Big Wave Awards.
