The kid is the offspring of a true surf legend. He’s spent his little more than a decade on earth — at least in this lifetime — bouncing around Kona, living like one of Peter Pan’s real-life lost boys, and soaking up whatever gems of wisdom his father has either knowingly, or naturally, passed onto him. And then there’s the whole genetics thing that probably played a part in Jackson Dorian being supremely talented with a surfboard under his feet.
All these things considered, it’s not a surprise Jackson Dorian surfs well enough to impress us as much as he does. Pre-teen groms with potentially world-class talent are fun to watch. They’re the future of our sport. Someday, their accomplishments will set new standards for what we believe can be done. Seeing somebody fly as well as Jackson does now makes you wonder, “Just how good will he become…” And should Jackson choose to keep pursuing this whole crazy surfing thing as a career, it’s going to be a fun journey to watch.
