The Inertia

Joshua Karbus hasn’t had a normal upbringing. And as you can see, that’s a good thing. His father, George Karbus, a photographer from the West Coast of Ireland, has had the young Karbus in the water since he was a wee tot.

“Josh was following all our adventures around the world since he was born and literally grew up in the ocean,” George wrote. “He caught his first wave when he was two and swam with Hammerhead Sharks when he was five. When He was six, (a) baby Humpback whale breached beside him and split his fin into two. Next day he was in the water with whales again.”

The elder Karbus released this video snapshot of nine-year-old Joshua, who also learned to freedive at a young age. While it’s more music video and highlight-based than biographical, the piece is a brief window into Joshua’s life.

As for counting dolphins as friends, according to the video description, it sounds as though Joshua grew up with dolphins. “When Josh was one, his parents introduced him to their friend, (a) wild, solitary Bottlenose Dolphin who lives by the coast and Joshua literally grew up with this dolphin.” Yep, kid has had one heck of a life and he’s certainly taking advantage of his opportunities.
