The general surf population more or less understands two things about surfing on the East Coast: first, people endure maddening flat spells. And second, when it’s on, it’s on. While it’s accepted that West Coast surfers enjoy a consistent flow of waves year-round, the best days on the Atlantic side of the United States feature waves that would make any individual who rides waves jealous.
Enter Ben Gravy, a guy who treads through so many less-than-stellar days that he’s built an entire persona on being the guy who froths over waves most wouldn’t look twice at. We’re all so used to seeing the man rock those “novelty waves” nonstop that we forget what it’s like to watch him fire out of a proper barrel.
If nothing else, one could argue all that time spent groveling through backwash waves and funky refracting wedges has seriously beefed up his skill set. And man, was the guy clearly due? Joined by some East Coast heavies like Sam Hammer, Balaram Stack, and a handful of others, Gravy just scored what he’s just shy of declaring the “best waves and the best surf that the East Coast has ever seen.”
So if you don’t like watching people get barreled out of their minds, you’re going to hate this…
