The Inertia

When most people think of the Wedge, they think of a ridiculous left-hand tube that doesn’t want to let anyone out. But, as is often the case with waves, there are other waves very nearby. The Wedge has a step sibling, and it is called Cylinders.

If you watch videos of the Wedge or, in a much better way of viewing, stand on the sand, you’ve likely seen Cylinders. It’s a slabbing right that breaks basically onto dry sand. Like its left-handed brother, it’s not an easy wave to surf. A quick drop, a quick vision, and a likely end with a serious underwater sand blasting. Brad Jacobson, a man who cruises around California pointing his camera at waves, recently headed to Newport to peer inside the cylinder that is Cylinders.
